The Mathmatics of Writing*

Read the situation below and then answer the questions before going to the writing prompt.

Situation:

You are the coach of the Stars' basketball team. Your team is one point behind and, at the final buzzer, a technical foul was called on your opponent, the Flames. You have to select one of your five players on the court to shoot the two free throws. If the player makes the first one, the game goes into overtime. If the player makes both free throws, you win the game. If the player makes neither basket, your opponent wins the game. The team manager provides you with the following information during the time out:

Player's name Free throws during the season Free throws in last 2 min. of the game

Tanya

Elizabeth

Mora

Shanika

Maria

12 out of 15

50 out of 50

45 out of 60

9 out of 18

27 out of 54

1 out of 3

18 out of 27

12 out of 16

4 out of 4

15 out of 25

Question box:

Agree or Disagree:

1. Mora took the most number of free throws.

2. Mora made more free throws than Elizabeth.

3. Maria has the highest percentage of successful free throws

Does the team shoot better during the last two minutes than it does during the entire season? What is the overall percentage for the season? For the last two minutes? What is the difference in the percentage between the free throws made during the season versus the last two minutes?

What criteria would you use to choose the shooter? List at least three.

What factors other than statistical evidence would you use to make your choice?

Who did you choose to shoot the free throws? Why her?

Writing:

Time to throw some spaghetti at the wall! Choose your point of view (either the coach or the team manager who has the stats) and write one of the following scenes:

Getting (giving) the information

Making the decision

Telling your decision to the girls

The crowd's reaction as the girl you chose walks onto the court
