World Building

There are many pieces of our culture we take for granted. And yet strangers coming to our country are often confused by some of the rituals we don't even think twice about. It's important to build a believeable world with a complete culture when writing, no matter what the time period or subject matter or genre.

First, read this great description on the importance of setting in literature. How do his comments apply to your work? Is your setting a character in your story? It should be!

Then take a look at ths template. While the questions on it are specifically designed for the fantasy/science fiction genre, many of the questions are also useful when writing a story set in a different historical period.

Last, document the world you build, how it functions and the characters that people it. If your book is part of a series, this is a critical step. Create this document when you start writing and keep updating it as the story blossoms. Use it for reference as you write to keep plot lines believable and characters consistent.

(NOTE: to use this template, open it, then save to your computer using the “Save As” function. Rename it and save. Then remove all references to The Ramayana and type in your own.)

Are you writing a fantasy?  Be sure to check out the Fantasy Novelist's Exam!
