The Synopsis
Definition:
synopsis -- a brief telling of a story. Used to sell a manuscript.
Activity:
1. Go here first and read through the page. Note: the two methods mentioned, writing the synopsis before the book is written and writing it afterward, are called "plotting" and "pantsing" and were covered in this course. For a refresher, click here.
2. Then go to this page and read through the sample synopsis and the comments along the side. This is what a big-name publisher is looking for when you submit a book.
Writing assignment:
For this assignment, you are a plotter. Write a synopsis for a story you may actually write some day. It should be no longer than five double-spaced pages. Use the checklist from the Fiction Writers site to help you.
