Digital copyright

I chose grey for the color of the title because this is an area that is very grey in a legal sense of the word. Old laws don't always apply, but new laws haven't yet been written. What should copyright look like in the Digital Age of social networks and free downloads?

Definitions:

DRM (Digital Rights Management) -- Created by the music companies to protect their profits and the artist's rights. Allows an electronic copy to be purchased for one machine. Cannot be shared over formats or machines.

Creative Commons Licensing -- allows the creator/owner of a work to determine the level of copyright he/she is comfortable with. See the Creative Commons site for more information. To determine which of these licenses works for you, click here.

Proprietary -- applies to the machines themselves. Can play only one kind of file or format (example: the Kindle only reads Kindle files, not .pdfs or .docs Click here and scroll to "software" for more information)

Kindle/ebooks/Nook/Vook/Ipad

Google Book Search

Kazaa, Bit Torrent and other file sharing sites

MySpace, Facebook, You Tube

Itunes & ebooks

Assignment: Read through the above websites and determine which copywrite protection is best for your story. Write a rationalization giving your reasons and turn it in.
