Descriptive Language and Collaborative Writing
Definitions:
adjective: words that describe nouns, pronouns or other adjectives
adverbs: words that describe verbs (currently out of favor in descriptive writing. Use SPARINGLY)
collaborative: working together in an equal partnership
Tasks:
Writing: In journal: Use at least six of the adjectives brainstormed by the class to write a paragraph about my desk.
Discussion: Share your paragraph with your partner. Read your partners and discuss: what does this description tell you about he character who owns the desk?
Writing: Write a companion character description of the character you see when you read your partner's writing (yes, this means you're using THEIR writing as the basis for YOUR writing -- this is one type of collaborative writing)
Discussion: So who owns a piece of collaborative writing, anyway?
(Put the piece you create in your "ideas for the future" file -- you may use this later or you may not. I will be reading all these and they do count as part of your grade)
WARNING!!!! AVOID WRITING DESCRIPTIONS LIKE THIS:
The cute-looking, bowlegged, tall, brown-haired, blue-eyed cowboy jauntily and quickly jumped onto his roan colored, bandy-legged, long maned, dark-eyed horse and road, clip-clop, jingle-jangle, off into the purple, pink and blue-hued glorious, beautiful, gorgeous sunset.
Although note the use of hyphenated adjectives. They can be very helpful -- if used sparingly!!!
