Two Tricks of the Trade:
1) Microsoft Word's Word count toolbar
To turn on the word count, open a document in Microsoft word.
Go to the VIEW menu; choose "Toolbars"
Scroll to the bottom of the list; choose "Word Count"
A small toolbar will pop up; drag it to the toolbars at the top of your screen to get it out of the way.
2) Microsoft Word's readability statistics
To turn on the readability statistics, open a document Microsoft Word.
Go to the TOOLS menu; choose "Options."
Click on the "Spelling and Grammar" tab
Under the Grammar section, be sure there is a checkmark in the "Show readability statistics" box
Close the Options window
From the menu bar, choose the grammar and spelling checker.
At the end of the spell check, you will get a box showing your readability stats. This will let you know what reading level your writing is appropriate for.
Writing:
Write a piece of flash fiction to be shared with the class. You will have two class periods to write and during the third you will share your writing.
